Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing, once nearly forgotten as a winter recreation, has made a comeback in recent years. The Ashley Inn at Cascade blazes the trail by offering its guests free snowshoes and equipment to explore the banks of the Payette River, all within easy walking distance of the hotel. This winter wildlife wonderland often excites guests with sightings of bald eagles, great blue herons, mergansers, and river otters to name a few.

Snow Tubing & Sledding

The Activity Barn, located just south of McCall, offers lift-served snow tubing to all ages. With several runs offering different levels of difficulty, there is fun for all ages. All runs offer at least 700 feet of slope with the steepest allowing for speeds of up to 45 miles per hour! Upon reaching the bottom, a surface lift can take you and your tube swiftly back to the top of the hill, making it easy to continue your fun. After the sun goes down, lighted tubing trails allow you to keep on sliding.

Sledding

There are few of us at any age who cannot re-create that childhood thrill of careening down a snow-covered hillside on any type of creation that could imaginatively be described as a sled. With all of the types of sleds available, if none is at hand, all you need is a cardboard box, a plastic disc, or a rubber inner tube and a convenient slope. Rentals are available from many of the local shops. Just look around: you're sure to find a suitable hill close at hand.

Curling

McCall is the home of Idaho's first curling club. The sport of curling started on the frozen ponds and lakes in Scotland over 500 years ago and has only recently gained popularity in the United States. The McCall Curling Club, whose home is the Manchester Ice & Event Centre, was started in the fall of 2003. McCall Curling Club membership is open to all and currently includes participants from Boise, New Meadows and Riggins. League play takes place during the fall, winter and spring and anyone is welcome to join.

Ice Skating

The McCall Manchester Ice and Event Centre is a year-round ice skating facility situated in the heart of downtown McCall. This outstanding facility provides the added bonus of views across Payette Lake to the surrounding mountains. The Event Centre offers fun for everyone in the community and its visitors, including figure skating, ice hockey and curling.

Elk Feeding / Sleigh Rides

During the winter months at the Eld Ranch in Donnelly, the Eld and Points families offer the Hap and Florence Points Memorial Sleigh Rides, one of the most unusual and popular experiences to be found in Valley County. Visitors are taken on horse-drawn sleigh wagons to view and feed the huge herd of Rocky Mountain Elk that has been coming to the ranch for over 25 years. Sleigh rides and elk feedings usually begin around mid-December. Wagons leave about every hour from 11am-4pm. For more information call 208-325-8876.
