When someone wrote the song "Winter Wonderland" they must have had Cascade in mind. The magic of winter in the region comes from the fact that, despite the abundant amount of snow and the mountainous terrain, most of the Cascade area is readily accessible for all kinds of winter activities. The local climate provides a definite winter season, which is rarely severe, offering many days of nearly perfect weather for any activity you might choose. Cascade is an ideal locaiton to serve as a base from which to take full advantage of your favorite winter recreation.
Snowmobiling
SnoWest Magazine identified Cascade and the Heartland as one of the top 10 places to snowmobile in the Northwest; so it is no wonder that snowmobiling is one of the major economic contributors to the area. In the midst of the varied terrain and spectacular scenery of the Heartland there are thousands of miles of groomed trails throughout the region that provide access to nearly limitless acres of pure adventure. Riders of all abilities can find open play areas offering gentle slopes, as well as challenging hillsides to tempt even the most adventurous off the "high-markers."
West Mountain
Turn off Hwy 55 on the Lake Cascade Pkwy (North Cascade) and follow to Lake Cascade (.03 miles). Continue south on Lakeshore Drive until you junction with West Mountain Road (FS 422) approx. 3.4 miles. FS 422 will continue on around the south end and join the west side of Lake Cascade. Continue to follow West Mountain Road to Anderson Creek parking. This is a very visible pull out for snowmobile trailers and the starting point to many groomed trails up West Mountain.
Landmark
From North Cascade, follow Hwy 55 to FH 22 (Warm Lake Hwy). Turn east onto Warm Lake Hwy and go approximately 24 miles to Warm Lake parking area. Unload your machines and enjoy the many groomed trails that await you.
Clear Creek or East Mountain
Seven miles south of Cascade, toClear Creek Station, turn left on Clear Creek Road. Follow Clear Creek Road to a large parking area, unload your machines, and enjoy.
Wellington Snow Park
Just 18 miles south of Cascade on Hwy 55 near Smith’s Ferry, the Wellington Snow Park offers 400 miles of trails, including 250 that are groomed, providing access to Cascade, McCall, Ola, Stanley, Warm Lake, and Garden Valley. The Winter Wonderland Trail takes you past Cascade and Donnelly offering scenic views at over 7,900 feet before reaching McCall. Across from the Snow Park, the Cougar Mountain Lodge offers warm meals and a cozy fire to chilled snowmobilers.
It is important to be aware that all snowmobilers must have a current Idaho State registration and a valid drivers license to operate on groomed trails (see equipment requirements under Rules of the Road.) Registration stickers may be purchased at snowmobile dealerships, county offices and the Idaho State Parks and Recreation office. A special sticker is required to ride within the city limits of McCall and can be purchased at the Police Department or local dealerships.
While it is possible to make extended trips into the backcountry from any one of the communities, a note of caution is in order. You should always inquire locally as to weather conditions and the nature of the terrain you are venturing into, and you should be sure that someone is informed of your proposed route and time of return.
