Hiking in the HeartlandSpring, Summer & Fall Activities

If the Cascade area can be described as a winter wonderland, then summer would have to be paradise. Actually, late spring and early fall should be included as near perfect times for most of the warmer weather activities. Just being in the area during these periods can be an exhilarating experience that lifts the spirit and energizes the body so that indulging in at least some of the available activities is almost irresistible.

Hiking

Hiking is a great way to exercise and at the same time explore the region. The surrounding forests abound with well-groomed trails. Information is available on many of the trails so that you can choose a hiking experience that suits your particular abilities or interests. For a start, there are literally thousands of miles of trails in the mountainous terrain throughout the area. The variety of trails enables everyone, from the casual or novice hiker to the serious sports enthusiast seeking an all-out backpacking experience, to find a trail or trail system suitable to his or her skill level. There are many trailheads near the Cascade area and most of the Forest Service campgrounds either have trailheads conjoining or nearby.

Go Prepared!

The success or failure of any outing depends entirely on whether you and your equipment are properly prepared. Mountain weather can be unpredictable even in what seems to be the most ideal of conditions. It is a good idea to talk to local Forest Rangers to be advised of current conditions and other circumstances. It should be noted that, while most of the trails outside of wilderness areas are open to either hiking or mountain biking, the wilderness trails are limited to hiking.
